Zapotec rugs are the epitome of handwoven, hand dyed wool rugs. Each "flat weave" rug is crafted on an upright shuttle loom by Zapotec Weavers using traditional designs. These indigenous peoples inhabit the famous artisan center of Oaxaca, Mexico. Known as "people of the clouds" these Master Weavers carry on their weaving tradition in a small village outside Oaxaca, Mexico.
Working in family groups, Zapotec weavers raise their own sheep, hand card and spin their wool, and dye the yarn with colorfast vegetal and aniline pigments. After preparing the wool and loom, weaving can begin. Depending on the size, a handwoven rug can take from one week to eight weeks to produce.
