Additional Information
The design of this dynamic USA-made wool blanket is an interpretation of a Navajo weaving style known as eye dazzler. Its pattern incorporates vibrant colors and movement reminiscent of a Southwestern sunset reflected in the waters of a river. Mesmerizing designs like these appeared during the late 1800s when Navajo weavers shifted from making blankets to weaving rugs. During that time, traders introduced yarns made in Germantown, Pennsylvania, via the Santa Fe Railroad. Unlike traditional handspun yarns, these new yarns had consistent textures and fabulous new colors, encouraging experimentation, innovation and creativity among weavers. The dramatic and brightly-colored serape shawls woven in northern Mexico influenced many intricate new designs as well. Borrowing from the elaborate serrated diamonds of Rio Grande/Saltillo serapes, Navajo weavers created truly eye-dazzling optical effects in brilliant new color palettes.
