This role is the voice of the brand. He or she creates a compelling brand voice that distinguishes the company in a crowded marketplace and that sells products. While partnering with art directors, designers and merchandisers, this individual must possess the ability to take abstract concepts or minimal direction and produce award-winning work. He or she leads the copy staff, and oversees all copy and messaging for consumer/customer facing materials and collateral. This management position reports to the Creative Director, and serves as a senior member of the creative team.
Define or refine the company's brand voice in alignment with senior management's vision
Create writing guidelines for the copy staff. These guidelines explain what the voice sounds like and why it should sound like that
Manage copy development, including overall organization, flow, fact checking and appropriate referencing
Write and/or oversee copy for all channels, including catalog, web, retail, wholesale, social media and corporate
Lead the team in brainstorming on strategic initiatives ranging from seasonal concepts to quick turnaround market response projects
Work with Marketing and Merchandising teams to create concepts and themes that build the brand and strike an emotional chord with the consumer
Work with creative partners to continually explore fresh ways to drive sales and to enhance the company's brand image
Collaborate with merchandisers to ensure that product copy is accurate and effective
Partner with designer staff to ensure copy and design complement and elevate one another
Seek, hire, supervise, and develop writers and proofreaders. Develop a strong bench.
Ensure the copy team delivers on schedule
Help create a culture of openness, team pride, team spirit, high standards, and continuous improvement
Collaborate with internal partners to identify areas of work flow that can be improved for better quality or efficiency
Establish and stay current on fashion impacts related to cultural/social trends in order to convey a sense of authority
Ability to communicate and craft relevant fashion messaging through the interpretation of trend
Skills and Qualifications:
B.A. in English, Creative Writing, Journalism, or a related field
Minimum 7 years of writing and editing experience, with at least three years in copy management
Strong strategic and conceptual skills
Thorough understanding of branding, print and interactive
Proven ability to write copy in catalog and on web that sells clothes and soft goods
A swift writer and a decisive and incisive editor
Works well under pressure and in a fast paced environment
Demonstrated project management skills
Able to lead a team with a balance of guidance and delegation
Portfolio of highly creative work
Mac-proficient in Microsoft Word and Adobe InDesign
