As the buffalo disappeared, Northern plains Indians of Montana and the Dakotas replaced buffalo robes with quilts. One of the most recognizable designs is the Morning Star, adapted in the late 1800s from the traditional Lone Star pattern. Covering most of the quilt top, its eight-point design was extremely difficult to create – the mosaic of tiny diamonds radiating out from the center took long hours of careful cutting, perfect placement and skillful handstitching. In Native American lore, this large star signifies the beginning of a new day – and also lights the way for departing souls. Handquilted on pure cotton. Washable. Imported.
